Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na analogie jakie można zauważyć między tłumaczeniem z jednego języka na drugi, a tworzeniem opisu modelu naukowego. Za materiał badawczy posłużyła teoria ewolucji Karola Darwina i jej pierwsze pełne sformułowanie w dziele O pochodzeniu gatunków. W wyniku analizy przeprowadzonej za pomocą metodologii teorii metafor konceptualnych wykazano, że kluczowe założenia teorii Darwina zostały wyrażone poprzez metafory pojęciowe, które dostarczają języka do opisu historii naturalnej jednocześnie wpływając na sposób myślenia o tym fragmencie rzeczywistości. Nadanie formy językowej nowym i nierzadko abstrakcyjnym konceptom, a takim jest opisywane przez Darwina pojęcie doboru naturalnego czy mechanizm walki o byt, stanowi akt przetłumaczenia tego, w jaki sposób twórca teorii postrzega jakiś aspekt rzeczywistości i jak go konceptualizacje, na zrozumiały dla obiorców język, który z kolei jest bodźcem do rekonstrukcji tego modelu w umyśle odbiorcy teorii.

The objective of the article is to highlight some analogies that can be drawn between an act of translation from one language to another and a description of a scientific model in language. The model under analysis was Darwin’s theory of evolution as described in his book On the Origin of Species, the first full presentation of the theory. The analysis conducted within the framework of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory has revealed that the key concepts of Darwin’s theory were expressed via conceptual metaphors, which provided vocabulary for the description of natural history but at the same time affected our thinking about this aspect of reality. When new and abstract concepts, such as the notion of natural selection or the mechanism of struggle for existence, become expressed in language, the process can be interpreted as an act of translation of how the author of a theory perceives and conceptualizes some aspect of the reality into language comprehensible for the readers, the linguistic form becoming, in turn, a trigger to reconstruct this theoretical model in readers’ minds.
