Justyna Bajda

Dr. habil. Justyna Bajda, literary scholar and art historian, professor at the Department of the History of Literature of Positivism and Young Poland (Institute of Polish Philology, University of Wrocław). She is interested in the era of Young Poland and European modernism, primarily in the aesthetic trends and issues related to the correspondence of arts. She deals with interdisciplinary research in the field of comparative literature and culture, with primary focus on the impact of French culture on literature, art, and material culture at the turn of the 20th century. She devoted her latest research to the existence and functioning of the color blue in selected areas of literature and culture of Young Poland (monograph in preparation). She has published nearly one hundred articles and detailed studies devoted to various aspects of culture and aesthetics at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, mainly in Polish and French. For years she has collaborated with the European Center for Slavic Research (Centre Européen d’Études Slaves) and the University of Poitiers (Université de Poitiers), where in 1998–2000 and 2015–2016 she lectured on the Polish language, history of Polish literature and civilization (Department of Slavic Languages and Orientals / Département des Langues Slaves et Orientales).

Artykuł opisuje plastyczne, literackie, muzyczne i filmowe transpozycje dzieła Arnolda Böcklina Wyspa umarłych w perspektywie badań interdyscyplinarnych. W pierwszej części przypomniano podstawowe założenia teoretyczne przyjętej perspektywy, szczególną rolę przypisując badaczowi, który wykracza poza metodologię jednej dyscypliny i wykorzystuje różne narzędzia do odnajdowania szerokich kontekstów analizowanej pracy.
Wyspa umarłych od czasu powstania jej pierwszej wersji w 1880 roku jest uznawana za arcydzieło, choć często – ze względu na liczne transpozycje – balansujące na granicy kiczu. W części analitycznej zarysowano historię powstania obrazu i omówiono fundamentalne zmiany w jego recepcji. Przybliżono też wybrane dzieła należące do różnych dziedzin, inspirowane malarstwem Böcklina. Wśród prac plastycznych znalazły się kopie, reprodukcje oraz formy artystyczne z pogranicza słowa i obrazu (komiksy), a także realizacje trójwymiarowe (scenografie teatralne i projekty architektoniczne). Omówione dzieła literackie obejmują utwory prozatorskie, liryczne, dramatyczne (m.in. dzieła Strindberga, Aragona i Przerwy-Tetmajera). Znalazły się tu również odniesienia do kompozycji muzycznych (Rachmaninow i in.) oraz produkcji filmowych, począwszy od prac powstałych w latach 40. XX wieku po reklamowy film komercyjny z 2013 roku.

The article describes the plastic, literary, musical and film transpositions of Arnold Böcklin’s work The Island of the Dead in European culture, in the interdisciplinary context. First, the article recalls the basic assumptions of interdisciplinary studies, with a special place given to a researcher who goes beyond the methodology of one discipline and uses various research tools to find different contexts of the analyzed work. Since its first creation in 1880, The Isle of the Deadhas been regarded a masterpiece, albeit often – due to its numerous transpositions into various forms of art – balancing on the border of kitsch. The descriptive and analytical part discusses the ways the painting has been transposed and has functioned in culture. It outlines the history of its creation and the fundamental changes in its reception. An overview of different art forms thus far inspired by Böcklin’s painting covers the plastic art, such as copies, reproductions, and art forms that rupture the border between the image and word (comic books), as well as 3D realizations (theatrical sceneries, architectural designs); literary works, to include prose, poetry, and drama (e.g. by Strindberg, Aragon, and Przerwa-Tetmajer); the inspirations found in music, like musical poems by Rachmaninoff and others; and, finally, references to film productions, from works created in the 1940s to a commercial movie made in 2013.
